Charity Afadua, once a vulnerable child at the Countryside Children’s Welfare Home in Bawjiase, Ghana, has transformed her life in a way that serves as an inspiration to all. Today, she holds a degree in procurement management and is married to Harold Acquah. But perhaps most remarkably, Charity is now at the helm of Seeway Academy and our Children’s Home which seeks to provide a refuge for kids in the community including those in need of being rescued whether from child labour or sexual slavery.
Charity’s journey began at the age of eight, following the tragic death of her father when she was just four years old. She was taken in by the Bawjiase home, where Mr Botwey, the late Captain Joe Yeboah, and Mama Emma Boat Yeboah, among others, provided her with the support she desperately needed. Organisations like Seeway Trust and Ghana Kids played a crucial role, ensuring Charity received the food, clothing, shelter and education she needed to grow into the successful woman she is today.
Reflecting on her childhood, Charity speaks with gratitude about the opportunities she was given. “My life was such a blessing because it gave me the privilege to learn and understand a lot of things,” she says. The support she received not only helped her academically but also instilled in her the values of patience, endurance and a deep faith in God.
She recognises that Seeway Trust’s involvement was particularly transformative in her life. We provided ongoing financial support through her life long sponsors Julian and Sarah Warren and of course, George and Sally Bainborough have been providing leadership and resourcing to Seeway with a deep commitment to ensuring our children are raised with a strong moral foundation.
We have been changed to change others, we have been blessed to bless others – Charity Afadua
Charity recalls her initial fear when she first met George and Sally, having never encountered people with different skin tones before. However, this fear quickly gave way to gratitude as she recognised the significant role the Seeway Trust leadership played in shaping her future.
Today, Charity stands as a testament to the impact of compassionate support and education. Many of the children she grew up with have also gone on to complete their education and secure employment, thanks to the unwavering support of our generous donors and child sponsors at Seeway Trust.
Charity’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference that dedicated support can make in the lives of vulnerable children. Her motto, “We have been changed to change others, we have been blessed to bless others,” reflects her ongoing commitment to giving back to the community that once supported her.
As she now leads a Seeway supported school similar to the one that helped shape her future, Charity Afadua is living proof that with the right support, any child can overcome adversity and achieve great things.
